Parveen Shakir


Parveen Shakir,  (November 24, 1952 - December 26, 1994) was a Pakistani Urdu  poetess, teacher and a civil servant of the Government of Pakistan.


Shakir started writing at an early age, initially under the pen name of Beena, and published her first volume of poetry, Khushbu [Fragrance], to great acclaim, in 1976.She subsequently published other volumes of poetry - all well-received - including Inkaar [Refusal], Sad-barg [Marsh Marigold], Khud Kalami [Conversing with the Self] and Kaf-e-Aa'ina [The Edge of the Mirror], besides a collection of her newspaper columns, titled Gosha-e-Chashm [The Sight Corner], and was awarded one of Pakistan's highest honours,the Pride of performance for her outstanding contribution to literature.                                                    Reference:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parveen_Shakir


Shakir died in 1994, as a result of a car accident while on her way to work. On her death the following "Qit'aa-e-Taareekh" was composed:


Surkh phooloN se Dhaki turbat-e-Parveen hai aaj
Jis ke lahje se har ik samt hai phaili khushboo
Fikr-e-taareekh-e-ajal par yeh kahaa haatif nay
Phool ! kah do "hai yahi baagh-e-adab ki khushboo"

English translation:
The tomb of Parveen is covered with red roses today.Her voice was spreading fragrance everywhere.On thinking about the year of her death,the angel told the poet to say "she is the fragrance of garden of literature."



 

 

Parveen Shakir was quite accomplished in areas outside Urdu poetry, as well. She had a Masters degree in English literature from the University of Karachi. She spent the 1990-91 academic year as a Fulbright Consortium Scholar at St. Joseph’s College and Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut. 
At the time of her death , she was pursuing a degree in Public Administration at Harvard University.   (Ref: http://www.chowk.com).




 



On 26th December, 1994, on her way to work, her car collided with a truck and the world of modern Urdu poetry lost one of its brightest stars.

Why are you afraid of Qur'aan?

We humans are the most eminent of all creatures of GOD ALMIGHTY. He always wants that we should be obedient to Him. For this purpose He guided us through a series of prophets. The teachings of all the prophets is the same i.e. obedience of GOD ALMIGHTY for success and prosperity of human beings in both the worlds. We should try to follow true teachings of all the prophets for achieving the goals of universal peace, brotherhood, equality, education and charity.

There are misunderstandings about surah Taubah i.e. Repentance (surah No.9) of the last book of GOD ALMIGHTY. Those who are against it, quote its verse No.5, the translation of which is as under:

"But when the forbidden months are passed, then fight and slay the Polytheists wherever you find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem(of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and pay zakat ,then open the way for them: for GOD ALMIGHTY is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

They claim that this verse is against all the non-muslims, directing to kill them. This is a negative propaganda deliberately or unknowingly, as the verse No.4( before this verse) and the verse No.6(after this verse) are not being taken into account. The directives of these 3 verses are as under:

"(But the treaties are) not dissolved with those Polytheists with whom you have entered into alliance and who have not subsequently failed you in aught, nor aided anyone against you. So fulfill your engagements with them; for GOD ALMIGHTY Love the righteous."

After the conquest of Makkah (the city of Mecca),thousands of people became Muslim for one reason or another but a small group consisting of the Polytheists and the Hypocrites was still against the Prophet and his followers. They were the Terrorists ,the hidden enemies seeking the opportunity to ruin and destroy the innocent people. The verse in question i:e verse No.5 is against the said Terrorists and not for all non-muslims as it is clearly mentioned in the next verse i:e verse No.6 of surah Tauba (Repentance):

"If one amongst the Polytheists asks you for asylum, grant it to him,so that he may hear the Word of GOD ALMIGHTY, and then escort him to where he can be secure, that is because they are men without knowledge."

This verse tells that after hearing the Words of GOD even if he does not become a Muslim and wants to go a safe place, escort him according to his desire.

There are 2 major groups of non-muslims: Those who have been blessed with books i:e Jews & Christians, and those who adore idols, sun, moon, stars, tree, fire and animals such as cow, elephant, monkey, snake, rat etc. and called Mushrikeen i:e Polytheists as they don't believe in Unity or Oneness of GOD.

The last book of GOD ALMIGHTY allows Muslims to marry a Jew or Christian woman in the same capacity as with a Muslim woman (verse No.5 of surah 5 Al-Maaida (The Table Spread). Those who say that the last book orders to kill the Jews and Christians wherever they are found, should think that when Muslims are allowed to marry Jew/Christian women how can they kill their wives and in-laws? Marriage of Muslims with the Polytheists (Mushrikeen) has been prohibited in verse No.221 of surah No.2, Al-Baqarah (The Cow) but still it is not ordered to kill the Polytheists as there is no compulsion in religion(verse 256 of surah No.2).Muslims are directed not to abuse idols or other things which are adored by them instead of GOD, as they can abuse GOD in re-action(verse No.108 of surah No.6 ,Al-An'aam i:e Cattle) Islam is not what a so-called muslim is doing but what the last book of GOD ALMIGHTY says and what the Holy Prophet actually did/ said. Similarly so-called Jews and so-called Christians are not following the true teachings of Moses (p.b.u.h.) and Christ (p.b.u.h.) who were true muslims (obedient of GOD ALMIGHTY)

I think that Islam is not a religion of war and violence. The verses about Jihad don't convey the general command of Islam. These verses about Jihad (Qital) relate in a restrictive sense to those who have attacked the Muslims. These are related to a particular situation. Similarly Jesus Christ said "Don't think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword." (Matthew , 10:34)

What a perfectly matched couple….This marriage was indeed prepared in Jannah (Heaven)….It’s like a page from a fairytale…These were just a few of the comments made after Yusuf and Fatima’s nikaah (wedding) ceremony.
A few years later and two beautiful kids in their spacious home, “the sea was no longer so clam”…Like many other marriages, Yusuf and Fatima’s marriage seemed to be experiencing some turmoil. Both were sincere and not a night passed when they would go to bed without making peace and amends.
Fatima comes to her husband Yusuf with a proposal: “I read in a magazine, a while ago, about how we can strengthen our marriage.” She smilingly and lovingly offered.
“Each of us will write a list of the things that we find a bit annoying with the other person. Then, we can talk about how we can fix them together and make our lives happier together.”
The husband agreed. So each of them went to a separate room in the house and thought of the things that annoyed them about the other. They thought about this question for the rest of the day and wrote down what they came up with.
The next morning, at the breakfast table, they decided that they would go over their lists.
“I’ll start,” offered Fatima. She took out her list. It had many items on it. Enough to fill 3 pages, in fact. As she started reading the list of the little annoyances, she noticed that tears flowing from Yusuf’s eyes.
“What’s wrong?” she asked. “Nothing” Yusuf replied, “keep reading your list.”
Fatima continued to read and tears flowed now more profusely from Yusuf’s eyes and began to wet his beard. Fatima somewhat nervous read all three pages to her husband. She neatly placed her list on the table and folded her hands over the top of it.
“Now, you read your list and then we’ll talk about the things on both of our lists.” She said happily.
Quietly Yusuf stated, “I don’t have anything on my list. I think that you are perfect the way that you are. I don’t want you to change anything for me. You are lovely and wonderful and I wouldn’t want to try and change anything about you.”
The wife, touched by his honesty and the depth of his love for her and his acceptance of her, turned her head and wept.
This is not to say that you must overlook every fault in your partner. If a marriage partner is abusive, or is an alcoholic or drug addict, or is unfaithful, or something of that nature then yes of course there must be changes.
But when it comes to the little things, remember that we are all imperfect beings, struggling to worship our Creator Allah as best we can, pursue our dreams in an Islamic way, raise our families, put food on the table, and balance all of the above fairly. We all have faults. We all make mistakes.
If every marriage there times of compromise.If you go looking for faults in your partner you will find plenty and that is for sure! You will find many mistakes, bad habits, and imperfections.
But you know what? If you look honestly in the mirror you will see the same things in yourself.
If you focus on your partner’s imperfections you will never be happy. You will always be dissatisfied, wanting more, feeling deprived, feeling frustrated. And you will end up making your partner miserable, and pushing your marriage into misery.
Instead, look for what is good in your partner. See his or her beauty, good habits, loving or kind gestures, relationship with the Creator Allah, hidden potential, and Islamic aspirations. If you look for beauty you will find it. Nurture that beauty by appreciating it, and it will grow. The love between you will deepen like a strong river, becoming more and more powerful over time. And those little things that used to bother you so much will seem not very important at all.
Allah is pleased with those who are thankful to Him. He increases His favours which become the means of comfort and respect in your marital home. If one fails to offer gratitude and reconcile our “petty” differences, then such an attitude surely amounts to disregard for the so many favours Allah has blessed us with.
Allah  Ta’ala says: “If you give thanks, I will give you more: but if you are thankless, lo! my punishment is severe.” (Holy Qur’an 14:7).

Shayari

In Urdu, poetry or Shaayaree, essentially comprises couplet, or Sher. The plural for Sher is Ashaar. The form ghazal is a collection of mulitiple ashaar - each of which should convey a complete thought without any reference to other shayari of the same ghazal. In fact, though belonging to the same ghazal, the different ashaar therein can have completely different meaning and tone relative to one another.

Sher

(Couplet). It consists of two lines (MISRA); first line is called 'MISRA-E-OOLA' and the second is called 'MISRA-E-SANI'. Each verse embodies a single thought or subject (sing) SHER, Shero, Shayari, Shyari, Shayri.

Yaaden

Ajeeb lagti hai shaam kabhi kabhi,Zindagi lagti hai bejan kabhi kabhi,Samajh aye to hame bhi batana ki,Kiyu karti hai yade itna pareshan kabhi kabhi!

Chand

chand ko dekha to kuch yaad aa gaya,
dhundla sa chera nazro pe chaa gaya,
dhyan s dekha to surat thi apki,
naam zaban pe chandni aa gaya.
saanso main bhi shaamil ho lahoo main bhi rawaan ho,

Bait-ul-Ghazal

The best Sher in a Ghazal.
Example- a Shēr (couplet by poet Majrooh Sultanpuri as given below.
mai.N akelā hī chalā thā zānīb-ē-manzīl magarlōg sāth ātē gayē aur kāravā banatā gayā
(I started all alone towards the goal but people kept joining and it began to turn into a karavan)[1]

Urdu Ghazal

(Ode). The literary meaning of the word 'GHAZAL' is to converse with beloved. Etymologically, it come from the Arabic word Ghizaal, meaning gazelle. It is a poem containing a minimum of 5 verses and maximum 25. The opening Verse of the GHAZAL is called MATLA and both hemistiches rhyme with one another. The last verse of the GHAZAL is called MAQTA which usually contains the penname of the poet. Most of Persian and Urdu writers have earned fame as GHAZAL writers. GHAZAL is the soul of Urdu literature and most popular form of Urdu poetry.
The following is an example of sher, composed by Mirza Ghalib:
nahii.n ki mujhko qayaamat kaa etiqaad nahii.n
shab-e-firaaq se roz-e-jazaa ziyaad nahii.n
It is not that I do not have faith in (the pains of) the day of judgement
But the night of separation is not less than the day of judgement.
What the poet is trying to say is that he trusts that the day of judgement would be very painful, as it has been described in Qur'an and Hadith; however, this night of separation from his beloved is not less painful than the day of judgement.
A better example of ghazal is shown below from two couplets of Baqa Akbarabadi*, a contemporary of Meer Taqi Meer, from a ghazal written in the classical conversational form, that is, a dialogue between the lover and the beloved. This traditional form, as seen in Hafiz Shirazi's works in old Persian poetry, does seldom appear in contemporary Urdu works.Today we have only few good ghazal writers it includes dr asif husain Tahir faraz,Iqbal ashar,Naseem nikhat ETC.
Kaha main ne! Sila meri wafa ka tujhsey kya nikla?
Kaha us ne! Nateeja dil lagane ka, bura nikla?

Kaha main ne! Wajah koi teri is be-wafaai ki?
Kaha us ne! Fida mujhpar koi, tujhsey siwa nikla!Said I! What return did my love get back from you?
Said she! Did indeed your heart have a bad experience?

Said I! What caused this unfaithfulness of yours?
Said she! Someone more enchanted than you has shown up!

Fard

Composition of only a single SHER, Shero-Shayari, Shyari, Shayri is called FARD.

Hamd

Written in praise of ALLAH
ai do jahan ke wali,ai gulshanon ke mali,her cheese se hai zahir,hikmat teri nirali'."Arham-ur-Raahimeen"(the greatest of all in mercifulness)is the first collection of Hamdia sonnets by Tanwir Phool(cf.S.No.7 of "opinion of others" available at www.allaboutreligions.blogspot.com ).The above book and another notable collection of Hamdia poetry "Zaboor-e-Sukhan" by Tanwir Phool,have been published by Jahan-e-Hamd Publications,Urdu Bazar,Karachi(Pakistan).

Hijv

(Satire). A poem written to condemn or to abuse a person. This form of poetry is considered of low type and which is usually avoided by reputed poets. The exact opposite of HIJV is MADAH which is a poem written in praise of Kings and Patrons.

Matla

Rhyming of the first two lines of a GHAZAL is called HUSN-E-MATLA.

Madah

Poem written in praise of Kings and Patrons.

Manqabat

Poem written in praise of Ahle-E-Bait (the members of the family of Prophet Muhammad) or Sahaaba(companions of the Prophet)

Maqta

The last line of a GHAZAL or a poem which generally contains the poet's pen-name.

Marsiya

A poem written to commemorate the exploits of great men of Islam; usually to describe the battle fought on the plains of Karbala in Iraq by Hazarat Imam Husain and his supporters against the army of Yazid. It is usually a poem of mourning. The famous MARSIYA writers in Urdu are Mir Baberali Anis and Salamatali Dabir. Even a short poem written to mourn the death of a friend can be called MARSIYA. Lord Alfred Tennyson's poem 'In Memoriam' can rightly be called MARSIYA. The sub-parts of MARSIYA are called NOHA and SOZ which means lamentation and burning of (heart) respectively.

Masnawi

A long epic poem describing the battles fought long ago and past events. It may also contain philosophical or ethical themes. The most famous MASNAWIS are Shah-Namah of Firdosi, Masnavi-E-Roomi in Persian language and Zehar-E-Ishq in Urdu.

Matla

The opening SHER of a GHAZAL.

Misra

One line of a couplet, or verse.

Munajat

A lyrical poem as prayer to God.
Khudaawand-e-doaalam ! benawaaoN ki duaa sun lay!Tujhi se multaji ham haiN,hamaari iltijaa sun lay

Musaddas

Each unit consists of 6 lines (Misra). Most famous writer of this type of poem is Maulana Altaf Husain Hali.

Naat

Verses written in praise of Prophet Muhammad.
Yeh kaainaat Shah-e-bahr-o-bar kaa sadqa haiJahaaN maiN jo bhi hai,Khair-ul-bashar kaa sadqa haiNabi ke naam se raushan hai mash'al-e-eemaaNDiloN maiN noor, Muhammad ke dar kaa sadqa haiChaman maiN Naat ke aie Phool! hai bahaar aayeeYeh baagh-e-Taiba ke nakhl-o-samar kaa sadqa haiFalak par chaand taaroN se raqam ism-e-Muhammad haiSuno tum,daafa-e-ranj-o-alam, ism-e-Muhammad haiBaRa zeeshaan Un kaa naam hai saari khalaaiq maiNKhuda kaa naam hai,phir muhtaram ism-e-Muhammad hai (SALLALLAHU alaihi wa aalihi wa sallam)

Nazm

The literary meaning of Nazm is Poetry (cf. Nasr, or Prose) A poem fully dealing with a single subject or thought.

Qafia

Rhyming of the last words of a poem.

Qasida

(Ballad). It is a long poem in Urdu, Persian or Arabic which usually describes battles or written in praise of kings; princes or the poet's patron. There is no limit of verses; it may even go beyond hundred lines.

Qat'a

(Fragments). It has two Ashaar and has a one complete subject. Plural Qita'at.

Radeef

(End rhyme). Each SHER or couplet of GHAZAL in addition to QAFIA may also have RADEEF which is rhyming of more than the last two or three words.

Ruba'i

Persian word for Quatrain. Contains only 4 lines, the third one being different from the other three as it should not have QAFIA and RADEEF. RUBA'I deals with social, philosophical and romantic subjects. In Persian language Umar Khayyam is supposed to be a great poet of RUBAIYY A T whereas in Urdu Yagana, Firaq and Josh are leading poets of this time and Anis, an old time poet.

Salam

(Literal meaning Salutation) It is a kind of poem in which the incidents of Karbala i.e. hardships of Hazarat Imam Husain and his followers are described It is also written in praise of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, and is recited by standing up. Subhan Allah.
Shaheed ho geyaa Lakht-e-Dil-e-Nabi,daikho! Sipaah-e-Shaam ki pur zulm kaj rawi daikho ! !Husain karne gaye thay na iqtidaar ki jang! YaqeeN naheeN hai to bachchoN ki hamrahi daikhoKhuda ki Hamd,Nabi ki Sana,Salam-e-Husain ! Yahi hai Phool kaa rang-e-sukhanwari daikho

Sehra

A song sung at the time of tying Sehra during wedding ceremony, praising the bride or the bridegroom and their relatives.

Shehr Ashob

Tah-Tul-Lafz

The manner of reciting a poem; like rhythmic prose i.e. without singing; word for word.

Takhallus

A name adopted by a poet, by which he is known in the literary world.

Wasokht

Literal meaning 'displeasure' or 'disgust'. A kind of poem in which the displeasure and carelessness of a lover is narrated; while relinquishing the beloved.

Geet

Song or hymn.

Qawwali

Sufi music expressing the love and oneness with God or Prophet Muhammad and his companions sung by a group of people to the accompaniment of musical instruments. Now-a-days, it has taken popular form covering subjects of romance, liquor, etc.
